On the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 355.4 you can exit off and head to the highest point east of the Mississippi which is Mount Mitchell State Park.  Mount Mitchell is 6684 feet high. The top can be reached by vehicle and then a short trail takes you to the peak. The deck at the top has gorgeous view and on a clear day it has a 85 mile view.
