Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing Event
Each year the Perseid Meteor Shower takes place in the summer time. Peak viewing for this year will be about August 9-14, 2015. During peak nights this year there will be no moon so the night skies will nice and dark for excellent viewing. The Perseid meteor shower is one of the best and brightest meteor showers. Look toward the north-east and look high in the sky right over your head to see the shooting stars. Expect to see 60 to 100 meteors per hour at its peak if conditions are right.
The Shenandoah National Park is having a special program and viewing on Wednesday night August 12, 2015 at 9:00PM at the Byrd Visitor Center at milepost 51 on Skyline Drive. The Perseids, Falling Stars will feature NASA JPL Solar System Ambassador Greg Redfern talking about the Perseid meteor shower and how to take photos of the night sky.
After the presentation the park will have “Under the Stars at Shenandoah National Park” from 11:00pm-5:00am at the Big Meadows area at milepost 51 on Skyline Drive. Stargazers will gather outdoors to watch the meteor shower as well as hear tales and interesting facts about the sky, stars, constellations and more. If you can stay awake peak viewing should be at about 4:00am!
